MOTHERHOOD

When Art and Motherhood Collide

A talk with Sarah Kinder, a mother and artist who is trying to navigate family life and find balance amongst the chaos. Together, Sarah and Michael began their family in London, a city that held her heart for 10 years of creativity and movement. Now, life looks a little different. They’ve returned to the north of England, trading city pace for Yorkshire roots, where they’re raising their two little ones closer to family, home and familiar ground.

A conversation with Sarah Kinder - a mother and artist - on motherhood, creativity, and the search for balance in the everyday chaos of raising two little ones

HOW DID YOUR LIFE CHANGE WHEN YOU BECAME A MOTHER?

“In every way, your life just isn’t your own anymore. My kids have all of me, physically, mentally and emotionally, so it’s very easy to lose sight of yourself. It’s a beautiful blessing and it has changed my life for the better but it’s all consuming.”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A MOTHER?

“I love watching my babies grow up into the incredible little humans they are. I am so proud of them and of myself! I love to see the world through their eyes. I find so much joy in the unexpected. Kids are unpredictable but this can bring so much fun.”

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST DAILY CHALLENGE AS A MOTHER - AND WHAT HELPS YOU THROUGH IT?

“Sleep deprivation! My kids have been terrible sleepers and I was running on empty for the first year of both of their lives. It definitely impacted my mental health. My daughter is now 2 but she had reflux/allergies/colic and I was up every night with her. I wouldn’t have survived that phase without the support from my own mum. I do feel so thankful to have my parents so close and able to help.”

WHAT DO YOU MISS THE MOST FROM YOUR LIFE BEFORE CHILDREN - AND WHAT DO YOU NEVER WANT TO BE WITHOUT NOW?

“I miss empty time and space - mentally and physically. The freedom to be selfish and focus purely on myself as that feels very alien to me now! I would never want to be without my kids, they are my world and I couldn’t imagine a life without that love - it’s a love like no other.”

HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF - SO YOU CAN SHOW UP FULLY FOR CHILDREN?

“As I mentioned previously, I do struggle with my mental health. I get very easily overwhelmed and anxious so it’s important for me to have time out, even if it’s a nice hot bath, a coffee with a friend or time with my partner just us two. Staying creatively productive is also really key for me to feel whole. I think it’s so important to have balance within family life but it’s really hard to make time with little ones.”

WHAT SURPRISED YOU THE MOST ABOUT MOTHERHOOD?

“I was so shocked by labour and the whirlwind of madness I experienced postpartum. Nothing could have prepared me for this. I do think it’s more spoken about now and it’s something I feel passionately about - keeping this conversation going as I know lots of mothers who have felt lost in it and it’s important to know that you’re not alone.”

“I love to see the world through their eyes. I find so much joy in the unexpected”

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO TOGETHER AS A FAMILY?

“We are a very creative family, Michael is also an artist and we used to collaborate a lot before we started a family so we really love to share that experience with our kids now. There’s also so much to love in experiencing the simple things in life together, like sharing great food, watching a family movie or getting out in the wonderful Yorkshire countryside.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE NOFRED PRODUCTS?

“I am definitely a minimalist and have an immense appreciation for great design which is why I love Nofred. There’s no compromise on my aesthetic taste with these products. The cube storage and kiddo tool boxes in birch are beautifully minimal and stylish and the mouse table and chair set is so sweet!“
